This is a relatively short book that discusses the Stoic philosopher's influence. He was adopted by early Christian as a forerunner of sorts because of how the Stoic principles he espoused and lived - material detachment; acceptance of circumstances; and even his martyr-like death - closely resembled Christian values. A fascinating fact: St. Paul refers to Seneca's brother Gallio in one of his epistles. He also appealed to modernist thinkers throughout history as he was ahead of his time at least on sentiments about women and slaves.Seneca also strongly influences later thinkers and mindsets, including the likes of Dante and Montaigne. He is referenced widely by many other authors and thinkers over the ages, although not always positively. The book does not go into much detail about Stoic philosophy as it focuses on Seneca's influence rather than his works. The author occasionally quotes in Latin or French (and once in German) often without translation, a downside for those of us who don't know these other languages.
